Seek & You Shall Find Your Niche

I’ve just gotten back from a wonderful conference on branding, and since knowledge shared is knowledge enhanced, wanted to share this tidbit with you. One of the pivotal elements in finding a niche is discovering a need in the marketplace – -but how do you know what the need might be?

According to the speaker I listened to, the answer might be as close as the nearest magazine!

Look at the magazines targeted to the field you’re interested in pursuing. You’ll want to look at both consumer magazines — those that target the general public — and trade publications — industry journals and magazines aimed at professionals in the field.

Skip the articles (just for now!) and flip to the ads. The ads will tell you what the needs are in your industry: people sell products and services based on perceived needs in the sector. The more ads, the greater the perceived need. Consider how your services would mesh with the needs being presented to you. Can you see an opportunity?

If an opportunity doesn’t immediately present itself to you, don’t lose hope. First, there’s always more magazines! Secondly, it may be that you need to find another angle or approach where you ‘fit’. It’s a matter of time and persistence. The longer you look, the greater the chances are that you’ll find your opportunity there, waiting for you to capitalize on it!
