Turn Off Your Fear and Niche Your Business

Many small business owner and entrepreneurs resist the idea of narrowing their target audience and finding a niche for their business for one simple reason: they’re afraid they’ll lose business. Believe it or not, this fear is holding you back from standing out and getting noticed in an overcrowded marketplace.

Declaring a niche for yourself  is often easier said than done.  What it means is that you are allowing other people to categorize you. As with most decisions you make in business, there are consequences, usually, both positive and negative.

The negative consequence of niching your business is that people stop sending you inappropriate referrals – those clients who need services you could provide, although such services are outside your area of specialization.

The positive consequence of niching your business allows people to start sending you better referrals, of exactly the type of client you’re looking for.

Fear of the negative consequence often precludes people from taking advantage of the positive consequence. Hesitant entrepreneurs often face a real conundrum.  Worried that they won’t get enough business they don’t want, they minimize the chances of attracting the business they do want.

It’s important to remember that people will categorize you, whether you want them to or not. The public will create their own categories, based upon media appearances, advertising, word-of-mouth and so on.

Becoming a Nichepreneur® (being a specialist in a niche market) and setting your own definitions allows you to keep some control of this categorization. Rather than leaving your image, and the success of your business, in the fickle hands of the public, you can set the agenda and position yourself positively in your marketplace, which will help you stand out and get noticed!
